Lyrics for Getting Ready for Sunday

Getting Ready for Sunday
From Wash Away Your Troubles
(Becky Buller & Valerie Smith, Goodnight Sparky Music, BMI)

Big tin washtub full of water
Last in line for a Saturday bath
Better scrub behind my ears
Don't wanna make my mama mad

All day long, she washed laundry
Pants are pressed, collar starched
Made enough food to last the Sabbath
Sun tea brewing on the porch

Come the morning, we'll start walking
Daddy leads us in a prayer
Following the tracks to town
Each and ev'ry heart prepared
Getting ready for Sunday

Preacher talks about fire and water
I don't understand the half
But I know "Jesus!" is the answer
To any question he might ask

Sit real quiet in the pew
Or me and Dad'll be out back
Rummage through my mamas's purse
Find a stick of gum and a Baptist tract

Next week they have the big baptizing
All my friends are going through
Dad says, "Child, are you ready?"
Ask him what I gotta do
To get ready for Sunday

Since Ma and Dad went to Heaven
Haven't made much time for church
With a wife and kids and a full-time job
Waking up Sunday is a lot of work

But I feel a stirring deep within me
Someone calling to my soul
Think I know who it might be
And where I'll find out a little more

So I'll put on my suit, shine my shoes
Head on down that Romans Road
Find my heart a new beginning
Hope my Ma and Daddy know
I'm getting ready for Sunday
